Martin MCs A Celebration Of Bert Jansch At The Royal Festival Hall, London

On what would have been Bert Jansch's 70th Birthday, a host of stars from the folk, jazz and rock music worlds came together to celebrate his influence over all of them and music as a whole. The Royal Festival Hall was the setting of Bert's last public performance on his 60th birthday and so music luminaries such as Robert Plant, Martin Carthy, Ralph McTell, Danny Thompson, Bernad Butler, Jacqui McShee and Beverly Martin performed a collection of Jansch covers and numbers influenced by him or from the times when he first came to prominence, to a warm reception from an at time visibly moved audience.
Martin Simpson MC'd the night and himself performed both solo and with the ensemble number at the end of the night, which he also musically directed. Martin said afterwards. "It was a great night. Everyone was really happy to be there and the respect for Bert was tangible amongst the artists there. We all worked really hard and I really enjoyed meeting everyone, many of whom I hadn't met before. Everyone had Bert in common as a starting point but we discovered more links too. On the rehearsal day, Robert Plant and I talked about banjos for what would never have been long enough!"
The concert was filmed for television and is currently scheduled to be broadcast on BBC 4 in February 2014. We'll let you know as soon as we do!
